Clouds and fog greeted the participants at the Chuck Corica Golf Course in Alameda that Wednesday the 20th of August. The weatherman had promised a day of sunshine and cool breezes for us and we were all waiting for the sun to make its appearance. Well it didn't take that long before the sun finally appeared and cheers could be heard from all the golfers on the course. The second annual Merit Scholarship Golf Tourney had begun. We returned to the Earl Fry Course for the second year to begin the arduous task of navigating through 18 holes while avoiding the sand traps, trees and other natural hazards which abound this tough golf course. Added to this year's tourney was the recognition of Hole Sponsors: Lena Fong, Steven Woo, Burnham Brown, Albert Brown, AiRung Liu/Morgan Stanley, America California Bank, PDQ and Francis Lan/Allstate Insurance Company. Our creativity ended with a pink piece of string. Want more information? Contact a golfer who was there!
The winning trio: Ben Wong, Peter Ho,
Larry Woon
Last year the tourney contributed over $1000 to the merit scholarship fund so we had hoped for even a better showing this year and we were not disappointed. A total of 9 foursomes were ready for the tourney and we started on time (amazingly huh?). At 10am our first group started…The team of Arnold Mew, Joel Jang, Warren Lee and Frank Leong teed it up and let it rip!
The tourney had the usual contests like the longest drive (2nd hole) and nearest to the pin on all par 3's. There were many great shots made all over the course by many of the golfers as you could hear shouts and cheers from all over the course! Questions arose on many of the par 3's as this writer noted that many of the names listed for the par 3's had the same name (name withheld to protect the innocent – till proven guilty – next year! Ha Ha). As this writer and his helper could not be all over the course at the same time there are no pictures of those fantastic shots, except in the memories of those who were there and there certainly were a lot of those!
Actually, dinner began early as Harry Greer, a co-chair, made the arrangements with the restaurant and the awards began in earnest with Arnold Mew, a co-chair, making the presentations.
Lowest net team – Ben Wong, Peter Ho and Larry Woon
Longest Drive – Clayton Yukumoto
Nearest to the pin – Valerie Greer, Ben Wong, Larry Woon and Rich Fong.
We want to thank all the golfers who came out to support the Wa Sung Merit Scholarship with their contributions and making the day of golf for all a huge success. Many thanks to the sponsors who contributed to the event, without them we would not have had such success. It appears that this year's golf tournament will contribute over $2000 to the merit scholarship for 2009. So what started out as a day with questionable merit ended with a fabulous dinner, award presentations and a sigh of satisfaction that another year for the golfers had ended and hopes for 2009’s golf tourney gleaming brightly and that elusive hole-in-one ...
See everyone in 2009!
