This year, Cultural Diversity is part of the WS 5 Year Plan, and we had a generous donor who backed the cultural diversity need. Wa Sung was the main sponsor and the event coordinators for a new International Stage idea. We asked the Chinatown Chamber if we can collaborate with them in presenting the new International Stage at their upcoming August Streetfest and they welcomed us and it would be on Harrison Street and 9th! We started planning the new stage and its logistics in May. It was a platform for a variety of cultures to share their voice, hopefully to learn and dismiss a lot of hate that is going around in general. We obtained performers to share their diverse culture with poets, cultural dancers, musical entertainment, cooking demonstrations, Brazilian drummers, City of Oakland Youth Commission, Taiko and on Saturday the Native Americans were opening our stage with an Indigenous land acknowledgement ceremony. On the sidewalk area we had a community art mural for the public to paint-draw-write with the mural theme: Why I ❤️Oakland Chinatown and the Year of the Ox.
Our committee consisted of Event Coordinators Co-chairs: Karen Dea, Lily Gee, Marketing/Social media: Aaron Chan, Lily Gee, MailChimp Database: Limsokpov Sung, Volunteers: Linyi Yu, International Pocket Cookbook: Robert Won, Jennifer Gee, Designer: Lily Gee, Forms Processing: Chun Huang, MCs: Linyi Yu, Aaron Chan, Jacky Chan, Leis Giveaways: Donna Chan Chu, Stage: Peggy Woon, Rich Fong, Steven Cheung and Peter Chu.
The Chamber on 8/13/21 announced the following and the International Stage co-chairs agreed:
Out of an abundance of caution due to rising COVID cases, the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce has made the difficult decision to postpone this year’s Oakland Chinatown 33rd StreetFest originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 28 - Sunday, August 29, 2021.
Note: A couple days prior to the above Chamber’s announcement, International Stage co-chairs Karen and Lily after much deliberation with concerns of the riskiness of COVID, Delta and the ongoing crime in Oakland Chinatown announced to the WS Board, Chinatown Chamber, and committee that due to health and safety concerns the International Stage was cancelled for this year. We will be returning in 2022!
Here was the planned International Stage lineup and see the pocket cookbook above for International recipes and list of fundraising donors!
